A course in Sailing Yacht Design is organized by Vene in cooperation with the International School of Yacht Design. The course is open for everybody with an interest in sailing yachts. You do not have to be an amateur designer to benefit from the course!
The venue for the lectures is the Auditorium Ruuma, Forum Marinum, Linnankatu 72, 20100 Turku. All lectures will be on two week-ends from 10.00 to 17.00 with a lunch break.

Sunday 18 November 2012; Lecture 3 (Tommi Mikkola): General wing theory applied to keel and rudder design, Planform optimization, Bulb keels, Advanced keel concepts, Keel and rudder statistics
Saturday 24 November 2012; Lecture 4 (Tommi Mikkola): Sail planform and camber, Interaction between main and foresail, Mast disturbance and windage from stays and shrouds, Balance and weather helm. Performance evaluation: VPP, CFD, EFD
Saturday 24 November 2012 (continues on Sunday 25 November); Lecture 5 (Karl-Johan Furustam): Rig construction: Forces on mast and rig, Mast stiffness, Boom, Spreaders. Hull construction: Loads and deformations, Forces from keel and rudder
Sunday 25 November 2012; Lecture 6 (Karl-Johan Furustam): Materials: Glass fiber, Exotic materials, Fatigue, Sandwich. ISO standards
Tommi Mikkola acts as a researcher and teacher at the Aalto University Marine Technology research group with main expertise in hydrodynamics. He is a keen sailor and has both cruising and racing experience
Karl-Johan Furustam is a senior expert at VTT Expert Services. His main expertise is stability and structural calculations, boat building materials and -techniques. Karl-Johan has designed and built two sailing yachts.
Larsson, L and Eliasson, R E (2007): “Principles of Yacht Design (3rd ed.)”, Adlard Coles Nautical, London. The book can be ordered with the registration and the price is 45 EUR. The textbook is in English, but the lectures will be given in Finnish!
Regular fee 185 EUR. Students 100 EUR.
Should the number of registrations fall below the required minimum the course will be cancelled and the course fees refunded.
